Gina DeLuca is a comedic essayist and performer living in Chicago. Self-effacing and cynical, Gina's writing speaks to the American zeitgeist with relatability and ease. She has read her pieces at Steppenwolf Theater, iO Theater, Essay Fiesta, and other venues throughout Chicago.

Kimberly Dixon-Mays is a poet, playwright and performer. A Cave Canem, Callaloo and Ragdale fellow, her poetry has been published in journals and anthologies including Reverie, Trigger Warning, Rhino and Consequence. She also released her first poetry collection, SenseMemory, with Blue Pantry Publishers and has developed a second collection More Than a Notion: Reflections on (Black) Marriage. As a playwright, she has received readings and staged productions with organizations including Chicago Dramatists, Crossroads Theatre Company, and Plowshares Theatre Company. She was a recurring performer with the Guild Literary Complex's collaborative poetry/theater project Poetry Performance Incubator led by director Coya Paz, co-creating and appearing in its original works Tour Guides and Like Bread. She is currently a member of the Chicago Poetry Center and Chicago Danztheatre Ensemble's project Body Passages and is also a 2018-19 Chicago Dramatists Tutterow Fellow.

Dayna Bateman is an ecommerce strategist who sometimes writes for obscure trade publications like MultiChannel Merchant and Integrated Solutions for Retailers. Once in a while she tells true stories at live lit shows around Chicago, and once took home the Loving Cup of Deathless Fucking Glory from the Write Club stage. Dayna is currently working on a memoir about growing up with her dad while he was growing up in the music industry of the 70s and 80s.

Annabel Lang is a writer living in Chicago by way of the Carolinas. She is the co-producer of a variety show-slash-workshop called Junior Varsity where artists present works in progress and the hosts invite the audience to participate by providing constructive feedback. The show is free and public, located at Joie DeVine at 7:30 on the second Tuesday of every month. Junior Varsity's second anniversary show is next week and there will be cake!

Let's be honest, when we scheduled a show for the night before the Fourth of July, we were a little worried nobody would show up. But wow, so many of you did! Thanks for packing the house, Tuesday Funk fans!

Episode 118 of your favorite eclectic monthly reading series got started with a pair of short essays on Barbie and self-image by Tiffany Gholar. Alison Thumel followed her with some fantastic poetry, then Ted McClelland shared the fantastical story of the Hodag from his new book Folktales and Legends of the Middle West.

Bartender Leah refilled everyone's drinks during intermission, then cohost Eden Robins read an essay about villainy and the current state of America, which you can read on the LA Review of Books' website. Next, Siobhan Adcock read an excerpt from her new dystopian novel set in Chicago, The Completionist. Closing out the evening, Mary Winn Heider shared a portion of her own brand-new novel, The Mortification of Fovea Munson.

Alison Thumel is a Chicago-based writer. She is a graduate of the University of Chicago where she was awarded the Elsie F. Filippi Memorial Prize in Poetry. Her work has recently appeared in DIAGRAM, The Rumpus, and Salt Hill. She is the author of the chapbook life of, which won Salt Hill's Dead Lake Chapbook Contest in 2016. Her second chapbook is forthcoming from Dancing Girl Press in late 2018.

Tiffany Gholar is a lifelong resident of Chicago, Illinois. She studied art as an undergraduate at the University of Chicago and interior design at Harrington College of Design and has a masters degree in painting from Governors State University. Her work has been exhibited in several Chicago area venues, including solo exhibitions at The Harold Washington Library and the University of Illinois at Chicago, as well as in group shows at The Chicago Children's Museum and The Chicago Center for Green Technology. When she is not painting, she works as a freelance interior designer.

Mary Winn Heider writes for kids, but has also worked as a public radio reporter, a high school teacher, and a bartender on a train in Alaska. She has an MFA from the Vermont College of Fine Arts and teaches writing to kids in Chicago Public Schools with the theater company Barrel of Monkeys. Her debut middle grade novel, The Mortification of Fovea Munson, is on shelves now.
