Numb

A cartoon this week in The New Yorker captures well what it often feels like in the city nowadays. It shows a crowd of commuters on a rush-hour subway train, while over the P.A. the conductor says (paraphrased): "Due to a bomb scare in Times Square, this train has been temporarily delayed. Please remain numb."
